New Fish Species Discovered in the Caspian Sea

Scientists have identified new species of goby fish in the Caspian Sea.

One of the previously unknown species was named the Caspian broadhead goby (Benthophiloides caspius). It was found along the coasts of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan — so far, only two specimens of this fish have been discovered.

Another newly identified species was named the Scythian marble goby (Proterorhinus scythicus). Scientists found it in Russia, in the Volga River Delta and the Eastern Manych River.
