A New Resort City Is Being Built in Egypt

World-renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has unveiled the master plan for a new resort city called “Alam Al Roum,” which will be built in northern Egypt near Marsa Matruh. The ambitious project, developed at the request of construction company Qatari Diar, aims to take the country's tourism potential to a new level.

The future city will stretch 7.2 kilometers along the Mediterranean coastline and cover a total area of 20.6 square kilometers. One of the project's most distinctive features will be a 22-kilometer network of lagoons located between residential neighborhoods and public spaces, directly connected to the sea. These waterways will not only enhance the area's appearance but also help collect rainwater and cool the surrounding environment.

The project includes protective measures to address changes in coastal climate and environmental conditions. Plans call for strengthening sand dunes, creating new wetland ecosystems, and preserving areas of native vegetation. Building designs will also take into account prevailing wind directions and the efficient use of natural daylight.

The new city will feature residential neighborhoods, luxury hotels, business and educational centers, and extensive golf courses. Cultural and recreational facilities will include a dedicated amphitheater, a lighthouse, a yacht club, a waterfront venue for cultural activities, a mosque, and commercial markets.

A major highway will connect the international seaport with a logistics center within the city.

Construction of the project's first phase is scheduled to begin in 2030. The initial phase, covering an area of 4 square meters, will include coastal recreational areas, lagoons, and a marina.

The project's developers are confident that the destination will become a major attraction for tourists and cultural professionals throughout the year, rather than only during the summer season.
