Did You Know About the Benefits and Possible Risks of Potatoes?!

Potatoes contain vitamins C, B1, B2, B6 and B9. They also provide minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, manganese, chlorine, iodine, molybdenum, chromium and cobalt.

When eaten in moderation, potatoes can contribute to the body’s energy supply and normal metabolic processes. Their nutrients may also help support the normal function of the brain, kidneys and other body systems.

In traditional home remedies, warm boiled potatoes wrapped in a soft cloth are sometimes applied around the throat to ease coughing. Grated raw potato is also used in some folk practices for local skin redness or swelling.

Frying potatoes in large amounts of oil significantly increases their calorie content. For this reason, boiled potatoes or potatoes prepared with only a small amount of oil may be a more suitable option.

Potatoes that have been stored for a long time, have heavily sprouted or turned green should generally be avoided. Such potatoes may contain increased levels of glycoalkaloids, including solanine. Consuming large amounts can cause poisoning, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and effects on the nervous system.
