New Tick-Borne Virus Discovered

Chinese researchers have identified a new virus transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. It causes symptoms similar to severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). The virus has been named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV).

Scientists detected the virus while examining patients with SFTS symptoms. Of 38 patients co-infected with ALTNV and Dabie bandavirus, seven died. Researchers stress that further studies are needed to better understand the new virus’s characteristics, the course of the infection it causes and its effects on health.
