Scientists Discover a New Snake Species

A new species of venomous snake living in limestone caves has been scientifically documented in Laos.

Scientists discovered the species in the surroundings of the Vang Vieng area in northwestern Laos, particularly near Han Ham Cave.

Researchers conducted DNA analysis on a female specimen found during the study, as well as on snakes documented in photographs. The results showed that the animal differs from its closest relatives and has a distinctive genetic structure.

The studied specimen measures about 82.5 centimeters in length. The snake has a brown head with light yellow-orange markings on the tip of its snout, while its body is covered with brownish-red patterns.

These venomous snakes are mainly active at night and are capable of climbing steep rock walls and stones by gripping firmly with their tails.

Because only four individuals have been found so far, scientists believe it may be an endemic species with a very limited habitat. Researchers have expressed concern and proposed adding it to the list of species at risk of extinction.
