American scientists are testing a laser-based cancer treatment method

American scientists have tested a new method for treating pancreatic cancer in humans — vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy.

The method is designed for patients whose tumors cannot be removed through conventional surgery because they are located near major blood vessels.

So far, the technique has been tested on a small number of patients. Six patients received treatment. In four of them, doctors were able to perform surgery afterward and remove the remaining part of the tumor.

One of the most significant results was that cancer cells were not detected in the tissues surrounding the tumor after surgery in three of these patients.

After the procedure, patients must stay in a dark environment for three days because padeliporfin increases the skin’s sensitivity to light. This can cause skin burns when exposed to sunlight or strong artificial light.

This side effect is one of the main reasons why this approach has not previously been widely used.
