Fabric with a Touchscreen Display Created
A new interactive fabric developed by scientists in Singapore makes it possible to display high-quality video directly on clothing and interact with digital devices.
The new material, developed by researchers at the National University of Singapore, fully retains the softness and breathability of ordinary fabric.
Thousands of microchips were embedded into a special fiber just 1 millimeter thick and 10 meters long, while laser welding was used to connect them.
During testing, fibers sewn into a garment sleeve formed a 96×54-pixel display with 8-bit color depth and a refresh rate of 30 times per second.
The fabric is equipped with a microphone, speaker and various sensors, allowing it to respond to voice commands, function as a compass and counter, and manage data via Bluetooth.
The material is reported to retain its properties even after 50 washes with detergent, withstand up to 1,000 folds and be safe for contact with human skin.
