Remains of a 237-Million-Year-Old Creature Discovered

A new species of ancient amphibian fully adapted to marine life, Gerrothorax oceanicus, has been discovered in China.

Paleontologists found two remarkably well-preserved complete specimens of the ancient creature, which lived around 237 million years ago, in China’s Guizhou Province.

Following scientific studies, the marine-adapted amphibian species was named Gerrothorax oceanicus.

The animal measured about 90 centimeters in length and had a broad, flattened body protected by a strong bony covering.

Although modern amphibians cannot live in saltwater, scientists are trying to understand how this ancient species adapted to such conditions.

According to researchers, G. oceanicus may have limited water exchange through its skin and removed excess salts through its gills.
