New Snake Species Discovered in Ethiopia

Scientists have discovered a new species of snake in Ethiopia’s Harenna Forest that feeds exclusively on bird eggs.

The species has been named Dasypeltis albigularis, meaning “white-throated egg-eater.” Researchers spent seven years describing the new species.

The newly discovered snake lives in dense forests at an altitude of 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level, where wild coffee trees grow and birds build their nests.

Adult snakes can reach a length of up to 92 centimeters.
