Toyota to Release Hydrogen-Powered Hilux Pickup

Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered version of the Hilux pickup at the 2027 Dakar Rally. The vehicle, named the DKR GR FC Hilux, will compete in the “Future Mission 1000” category, designed for vehicles powered by alternative energy sources.

The project is being carried out by Toyota Gazoo Racing with the support of partners including Jameel Motorsport, Denso, IAV, and tyre manufacturer Toyo Tires. The pickup will have to complete special stages covering approximately 1,000 kilometers.

The experience gained during testing will be used to develop a production hydrogen-powered Hilux, which is planned to be released in 2028. The road version is expected to have a range of more than 400 kilometers and be capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 2.5 tons.
