560-Million-Year-Old Fossils of Ancient Organisms Discovered
Three-dimensional fossilized remains of an ancient organism estimated to be around 560 million years old have been discovered in the Arctic. They are the oldest known three-dimensional fossils in science. The site where they were found is also regarded as one of the European regions where such remains have been discovered most frequently in recent decades.
The key feature of the discovery is the preservation of its three-dimensional structure. Most fossils from this period were flattened under the pressure of rock layers over millions of years and have survived only as flat impressions. Researchers from the University of Cambridge published new information on the finding in the journal Palaeontology.
