More than 40% of land could become desert by 2100

Global warming could make the planet’s dry regions even more arid.

By the end of the 21st century, dry areas could cover more than 40% of Earth’s land surface.

At the same time, scientists from the Chinese Academy of Forestry suggest that the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, considered one of the main causes of warming, could slow down the expansion of deserts.

Australia is expected to face the most severe changes, followed by Brazil. Large-scale changes are also anticipated in some parts of Africa.
