Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Put on Display at the Vatican
Eight unique historic vehicles specially built by German automaker Mercedes-Benz for the Popes have been presented to the public at the Vatican. The exhibition highlights nearly a century of cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican and will run until early February 2027.
The history of this partnership began in 1930 with the first «Nürburg 460 (W08)» presented to the Holy See. The ceremonial sedan, designed for Pope Pius XI, featured an interior decorated with expensive silk and a specially installed chair. Over time, the technology and design of papal vehicles were significantly improved. A specially extended «300 d Landaulet (W189)» with removable rear windows was created for John XXIII, making it easier for him to address the public. The «600 Pullman Landaulet (W100)» delivered to Paul VI featured a raised roof and special equipment for communication with the driver.
The exhibition also includes the 1967 «300 SEL Pullman», the famous 1980 «Geländewagen 230 G», as well as the 1997 «S 500 Landaulet» and modern «ML» series vehicles.
