Did You Know About a Plant That Can Grow Both in Water and on Land?!

One of the unusual plants capable of growing both in water and on land is Persicaria amphibia, commonly known as water knotweed.

This plant is widely distributed across the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, North America, and North Africa.

Persicaria amphibia has two noticeably different forms — aquatic and terrestrial. Their appearance and internal structure vary depending on the environment in which they grow.

The aquatic form has flexible stems that can extend into water up to 2 meters deep. As the depth increases, the number of leaves decreases, while at the water’s surface they spread along branches measuring 2–8 cm in length.

The outer surface of the leaves is covered with a thick waxy layer that protects them from external influences. Gas exchange and water absorption take place directly through different parts of the plant.

Large spaces between the cells help store gases. In early summer, beautiful flowers appear above the water’s surface.

Its roots can extend as deep as 50 cm into the soil. When growing on land, the stems are not as long as those of the aquatic form and reach up to about one meter.

The leaves are less flexible and have a firmer structure. They range from 4 to 14 cm in length and from 1 to 3 cm in width.

The seeds and leaves are light in color, helping protect them from excessive heat and sunlight.
