Palm Oil: Benefits and Uses
Palm oil is a natural product obtained from the fruits of palm trees grown in Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. People have used these fruits as food for thousands of years. Archaeological studies in Egypt have also found traces of palm oil in remains dating to around 3000 BC.
Today, palm oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in the world. Unrefined red palm oil is known for its reddish-yellow color, which comes from its carotenoid content. Carotenoids have antioxidant properties and may help protect cells from oxidative stress.
Palm oil also contains carotenoids that can contribute to vitamin A formation in the body, along with forms of vitamin E. These nutrients play important roles in maintaining normal skin, hair, and nail health. For this reason, different forms of palm oil are also used in cosmetics and skincare products.
Crude palm oil contains both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. About half of its fat content is saturated, so, like other fats, it is best consumed in moderation.
Palm oil is a source of energy, but its overall health effects depend on the person’s diet, the amount consumed, and how the oil has been processed.
