The Entrepreneur Who Helped Lay the Foundations of Aircraft Manufacturing

William Boeing (1881–1956) was an American engineer, designer, and major industrialist. He graduated from Yale University in 1903, and in 1916 he built his first aircraft and founded the company “Pacific Aero Products.”

The company was soon renamed “Boeing Airplane Co.” In its early years, it mainly focused on producing military, mail, and cargo aircraft.

In 1934, William Boeing sold his share in the business and became interested in horse breeding. Even so, he did not completely leave aviation behind. During World War II, he worked as a consultant for his former company.

It was around this period that the concept of the “Boeing 707” jet passenger aircraft, which helped usher in a new era in aviation, began to take shape. The new aircraft was tested and made its first flight in 1954. William Boeing lived to see this historic achievement by the company that carried his name.

Throughout its history, “Boeing” has set numerous world records. For example, the “Boeing 747-400,” which entered service in 1989, was one of the largest and most spacious passenger aircraft of its time.
