How Beneficial Is Reading Books?

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge found that reading is associated with better attention and memory, fewer mental health problems, and a healthier lifestyle.

Barbara Sahakian, a professor at the University of Cambridge and the lead author of the study, said: “Reading is an excellent way to maintain brain health, develop skills, and improve our well-being.”

Despite growing evidence of the benefits of reading for young people, the overall number of children and school students who read books in Europe is declining.

Reading books not only increases knowledge but also provides significant benefits for both physical and mental health.

Even six minutes of reading can reduce stress and tension by up to 68% and help normalize blood pressure and heart rate.

Reading a printed book before bedtime signals to the brain that it is time to rest and can contribute to better sleep.

Reading fiction can also improve the ability to understand other people’s feelings and thoughts, helping to strengthen social relationships.
