Glaciers in the Himalayas are losing their mass 65% faster compared with ten years ago. This situation increases security risks in the region and threatens the lives of millions of people.

The United Nations has also warned about the emergence of unprecedented instability in the region.

At the end of August 2026, the collapse of a massive glacier on the border between Nepal and Tibet caused severe flooding and landslides.

The water flow destroyed homes, roads, bridges, and energy infrastructure facilities. It also swept away the “Gyirong” border crossing between Nepal and China.

At least 1,300 people were killed in the disaster.
