1.2 billion cubic metres of water will be released into the Aral Sea

As part of a water conservation programme, Kazakhstan plans to release an additional 1.2 billion cubic metres of water into the North Aral Sea by the end of this year.

From 1 October last year to the present, 1.4 billion cubic metres of water have been delivered to the North Aral Sea through the Syr Darya River.

During the current irrigation season, 40 cubic metres of water per second are being directed into the North Aral Sea.

Currently, the volume of water in the sea is 23.5 billion cubic metres. Compared with last year, the salinity level of the North Aral Sea has decreased by an average of 10 percent.
