World’s Longest Amber Earrings Created in Kaliningrad
Master jewelers at the Kaliningrad Amber Combine have set an unusual new record by creating what is believed to be the world’s longest earring made from Baltic amber. According to TASS, citing the company’s press service, the unique piece of jewelry was recently unveiled to the public for the first time during the “Creative Economy Days” forum in St. Petersburg.
The unusual set consists of two asymmetrical earrings. Previously, no one had managed to produce an amber earring longer than 30 centimeters. The new creation nearly doubled that figure. It was designed as an ear cuff, allowing the weight to be distributed evenly across the ear for greater comfort. The second earring in the set is slightly shorter and uses a conventional clasp.
The rare jewelry piece is made of amber fragments set in gold-plated silver and attached to strong yet flexible titanium threads. According to Maya Skvortsova, Deputy General Director of the company, the natural lightness and structural properties of amber mean that the 63-centimeter earring weighs just 54 grams. For comparison, a similar piece made from garnet would be around four times heavier.
The striking jewelry set will be displayed for the next month at the Kaliningrad Amber Combine’s new showroom on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg. Visitors will be able not only to view the piece, but also to try it on and take photographs.
