Spanish Footballer Dies After Collision with Goalkeeper
Football matches in Spain will begin with a minute of silence following the death of Jesús de Miguel. The 30-year-old Tenerife striker passed away after suffering a serious injury during a match.
The tragedy occurred during a game between Tenerife and Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. While challenging for the ball, striker Jesús de Miguel collided with visiting goalkeeper Jesús Owono and suffered a severe impact. The goalkeeper’s knee struck the player in the chest, and the forward went into cardiac arrest following the collision.
Medical personnel managed to restore his heartbeat, and he was taken to hospital. However, doctors were unable to save him. Tenerife officially announced the death of Jesús de Miguel on November 3. The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed cup matches scheduled for that day.
According to preliminary suggestions, the footballer’s death may have been caused by a rare medical condition known as commotio cordis. This condition occurs when a strong blow to the chest triggers a sudden disruption of the heart’s rhythm and cardiac arrest, even in otherwise healthy individuals. However, the precise medical cause of the player’s death has not yet been officially established.
