State of Emergency Declared in New York Over Measles

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency due to a rise in measles cases in rural areas and neighboring regions.

To prevent the spread of the infection, authorities are bringing in additional medical personnel. Their main tasks will be conducting screenings and actively vaccinating the population.

Since the beginning of the year, 108 measles cases have been recorded in the state. Seven of those infected are residents of New York City. In rural areas, more than 1,000 vaccinations have been administered since mid-July.

Doctors are also concerned about the situation in neighboring Pennsylvania. Nearly 700 people have contracted measles there this year, with 133 hospitalized.

In August, four measles-related deaths were also recorded in Pennsylvania. This was the first such occurrence in the past 35 years.
