Toyota and Michigan Researchers Unveil a Steering Wheel with Inflatable Elements

Experts from the University of Michigan and the Toyota Research Institute have jointly developed an unusual steering wheel designed to improve interaction between drivers and vehicles.

The new system features special inflatable elements intended to make communication between drivers and semi-automated driving systems easier. These elements are positioned on the steering wheel around the traditional 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock hand positions.

For example, if the system recommends turning left, the inflatable elements on the left side of the wheel begin to expand. If an obstacle appears on the road or the system needs to attract the driver’s attention more strongly, the elements repeatedly inflate and deflate, creating a noticeable tactile signal through the driver’s hands.
