The Role of Harmala in Human Life

The Role of Harmala in Human Life

In the traditional medicine of the Turkmen people, whose knowledge has been accumulated over centuries, harmala is regarded as a plant with various beneficial properties. In particular, there is a traditional belief that its smoke can protect against the “evil eye,” and it is therefore burned inside homes. Harmala smoke is also traditionally used to cleanse the room of a newborn baby.

In folk practice, inhaling harmala smoke is considered beneficial when symptoms such as colds, flu, and sore throat occur. There is also a belief that the smoke helps people relax and relieve stress. Some sources state that consuming harmala seeds may help eliminate intestinal parasites.

Modern medical research is also examining the potential beneficial effects of certain substances found in harmala. Its alkaloids are reported to have activity against some bacteria and viruses. For this reason, such compounds may be included in certain ointments used for skin infections. Harmala oil is also said to have antimicrobial properties.

There is also research into the possible vasodilating and pain-relieving effects of harmala extract. Its potential influence on brain activity and emotional stability is also being studied scientifically.
