New Biographical Film About Chingiz Aitmatov’s Life Presented to the Public

“Ray of Sun Pictures” has unveiled the trailer for “Aitmatov,” a biographical film dedicated to the life and creative legacy of Chingiz Aitmatov, one of the great figures of Kyrgyz literature.

The film began screening in cinemas across Kyrgyzstan on October 15 and is expected to enter international distribution in November.

The main events of the film take place in 1979. At that time, the writer completes his famous novel “The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years,” but difficulties related to Soviet censorship put the publication of the work in serious doubt.

During a trip to Europe, Aitmatov is presented with the idea and opportunity to remain in the West. The offer promises him creative freedom, international recognition, and a comfortable life without restrictions.

At the same time, however, this choice brings his past vividly back to mind: he seems to relive the tragic loss of his father during the Stalinist repressions, the hardships of his childhood, and his first love.

Reflecting on the image of the “mankurt” in his novel — a person cut off from his roots and history — Aitmatov comes to understand that true freedom cannot exist separately from one’s homeland, responsibility to one’s people, and historical memory.

As a result, the writer reaches an important decision that determines not only his own fate, but also the future of a work destined to become part of the spiritual heritage of an entire nation.

Actor Bolot Tentimyshov portrays Chingiz Aitmatov in the film. Well-known Russian actor Sergey Bezrukov also appears as Boris Pasternak.

The film is directed by Kanibek Kalmatov, previously known as a cinematographer. This movie marks his directorial debut.
