Rare Ring Depicting the Famous Lighthouse Found Underwater Near Alexandria

During underwater research near Antirhodos Island off the coast of Alexandria, archaeologists discovered an extremely rare historical artifact. A bronze signet ring engraved with an image of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — was found beneath the water.

According to “The Art Newspaper,” it is considered the only surviving ancient ring known to feature such an image of the famous lighthouse.

The rare artifact was discovered by specialists from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), led by Franck Goddio, in the area of the Great Harbour, where royal complexes once stood.

The head of the research team noted that the ring is connected with the palace complex and is of great importance for studying the architecture of that period.
