Village of Centenarian Women Found on the Island of Sardinia
The mountain village of Bolotana on the Italian island of Sardinia has attracted researchers’ attention because of the unusually long lives of its residents.
According to a study published in “Frontiers in Aging,” women living in the village are about three times more likely to reach the age of 100 than women in the United States.
Demographic research found that of 3,060 people born in Bolotana between 1900 and 1925, 38 lived to at least 100 years old.
According to 2024 data, six residents over the age of 100 were living in the settlement, which has a population of only around 2,300.
Women who reach the age of 70 there can also expect to live, on average, about another 21 years. By this measure, women in Bolotana rank second in the world, behind only women in Hong Kong.
