Microsoft Introduces New “Michelangelus” Font
Microsoft has officially introduced a new typeface called “Michelangelus,” based on the handwriting of the great Renaissance master Michelangelo.
The project was developed by the Studiogusto design studio at the request of “Fabbrica di San Pietro,” the organization responsible for preserving St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The work was created to mark the 400th anniversary of the famous basilica’s consecration.
Rather than simply copying Michelangelo’s handwriting, the designers adapted its distinctive style, letter proportions, and dimensions to meet modern typographic requirements.
The typeface is based on Michelangelo’s original manuscripts, personal notes, and letters preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Archive.
The design team reportedly spent an entire week refining just one version of the lowercase letter “g.”
For the capital letters, the designers also drew inspiration from inscriptions found in Michelangelo’s architectural works and famous sculptures, including the “Pietà.”
“Michelangelus” includes more than 2,000 characters and is offered in several styles, including regular, italic, semibold, and semibold italic.
The new font is already available for download from official sources. It is also expected to be added to the Microsoft 365 suite by the end of the year, including popular applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
