The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) has decided to award Argentina national football team captain Lionel Messi its highest honorary degree.

The award ceremony will be held at the “El Monumental” stadium ahead of the footballer’s farewell match for the national team against Benin.

In its decision, the university’s Higher Council noted that Messi’s football career is an example of “excellence, perseverance, humility, and commitment to ethical principles,” and that he has also contributed to promoting Argentina and its values around the world.
