Winston Churchill Painting to Be Sold at Christie’s Auction
The famous London auction house Christie’s is putting up for sale “Amaryllis Lily,” a painting created in 1948 by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Art experts estimate the work at between £300,000 and £500,000, or approximately $398,000–$663,000.
The painting depicts a red amaryllis flower on a table against a dark background. Churchill gave the work to his daughter, Mary Soames. In 1995, she later donated it to the “Churchill Fellowship” foundation.
All proceeds from the auction will go toward supporting the arts through the “Making Space for the Arts” project.
The British statesman began painting at around the age of 40 and produced roughly 500 works over the course of his life.
One of Churchill’s most expensive works ever sold was a landscape painted during World War II. In 2021, it was sold at the same Christie’s auction house for £8.285 million.
The painting had previously belonged to actress Angelina Jolie and had been given to her by Brad Pitt.
