The History of the Origins and Spread of Sneakers

The development of modern sneakers began in the late 19th century. During this period, Joseph William Foster started producing specialized footwear designed for sports. Earlier rubber-and-canvas shoes were often uncomfortable and bulky, and right and left shoes were not always clearly distinguished.

Later, the U.S. Rubber Company introduced lighter and more comfortable “Keds” made from canvas and rubber. Mass production began in 1917. Because the shoes allowed people to walk relatively quietly, they became known as “sneakers,” derived from the English word “sneak,” meaning to move quietly or unnoticed.

In Germany, brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler established a factory producing specialized footwear for running. Over time, companies began developing separate models for different sports, including special shoes for tennis.

By the middle of the 20th century, the growth of youth culture and James Dean’s image in the film “Rebel Without a Cause” helped sneakers move beyond sport and into everyday fashion.

Compared with leather shoes, sneakers were cheaper, lighter, and more practical, which made them especially popular among young people.
