Historic UEFA Champions League Record: 78 Goals Scored in the Second Round of the League Phase

A new tournament record for goals scored was set in the second round of the UEFA Champions League league phase. Across 18 matches, the teams found the net a total of 78 times.

The matches played on October 13 and during the night into October 14 produced plenty of goals for football fans.

Barcelona, playing away in Istanbul against Galatasaray, won 4–1. Atletico defeated Manchester United 2–0 at home, while Arsenal recorded a convincing 3–0 victory over Lille.

One of the most unexpected results of the round came in Norway, where Bayern Munich faced Viking. The closely contested match ended in a 3–3 draw.

A total of 32 goals were scored on the first matchday.

The games played on October 14 and during the night into October 15 were even more productive, with 46 goals scored across nine matches.

One of the main fixtures of the round took place in England, where Manchester City hosted Paris Saint-Germain.

The Paris side scored three goals in a short spell, extended their advantage and eventually won the match 4–2.

Even two goals from Erling Haaland were not enough to save Manchester City from defeat.
