Share of Gasoline-Powered Cars Falls on Global Market
The share of gasoline-powered vehicles in the global market has fallen below 50% for the first time. In the first half of 2026, gasoline vehicles with internal combustion engines accounted for 49% of the global market.
A total of 20.25 million such vehicles were sold worldwide during the first six months of the year. This was 10% lower than in the same period of 2025.
For comparison, their market share stood at 73% in 2021.
One of the main reasons cited for the decline is the crisis in the Persian Gulf, which led to a sharp increase in gasoline prices. At the same time, demand for vehicles with alternative powertrains is also growing.
