Speech by B. Amanov, Chairman of the State Corporation “Turkmengeology” at the 31st International Conference “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan — 2026”
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen!
Dear participants of the International Conference!
As is well known, Turkmenistan possesses significant hydrocarbon reserves. The discovered fields are of great importance for the further development of the oil and gas industry. Their development involves addressing a whole range of geological, technological and economic challenges. Geological and geophysical methods play a particularly important role in this process, as they make it possible to obtain information about subsurface structures, the properties of productive formations and the condition of a field without directly exposing the entire geological section.
From the perspective of our Corporation’s specialists, further field development should be based on the continuous refinement of geological models, monitoring of productive reservoir development and the most efficient possible use of information obtained during exploration and development, as well as during the operation of the existing well stock.
First of all, it should be noted that the main task of geophysical support is to provide a more detailed understanding of the geological structure of a field. Even where a large amount of information has already been obtained, there may still be areas where the structure of productive formations has not been studied in sufficient detail.
One of the principal methods for addressing this task is seismic exploration. Modern 3D seismic surveys make it possible to obtain a three-dimensional image of the geological section and significantly improve the accuracy of a field’s structural model.
In the future, repeated or monitoring seismic surveys may become particularly important. Comparing seismic data obtained at different stages of field development can potentially make it possible to track changes in productive formations associated with gas withdrawal and changes in reservoir pressure.
Particular attention should be paid to improving the quality of seismic data processing and interpretation. For large and geologically complex fields, simply obtaining a seismic cube is not sufficient. It is important to extract the maximum amount of geological information from it.
For this purpose, attribute analysis, seismic inversion, velocity modelling and other modern methods may be applied. Their integrated use makes it possible to move from basic structural interpretation to a more detailed assessment of rock properties.
Another key area is the integration of seismic and well data. Information obtained during drilling should be continuously compared with seismic survey results. Geophysical well logging makes it possible to determine a range of physical properties that are directly relevant to evaluating reservoir productivity. Logging plays a particularly important role here, as it allows the geological section to be studied directly in the near-wellbore area.
Another important area is geophysical monitoring of field development. Once a well has been commissioned, the geological model should not remain unchanged; continuous monitoring of productive formations is required.
The use of a modern three-dimensional geological model makes it possible to identify promising zones, refine the location of faults and detect areas with the most favourable reservoir properties. As a result, geological risks during drilling can be reduced and the probability of obtaining commercial gas flow can be increased.
Ensuring industrial and environmental safety is no less important. Geophysical monitoring can be used to monitor subsurface conditions and to identify potentially dangerous changes in a timely manner.
Further field development requires combining accumulated experience with modern geophysical technologies. It is precisely an integrated approach that will make it possible to make better-informed decisions and use the resource potential as efficiently as possible. Therefore, the further development of geophysical support should become one of the key elements of efficient and safe field development.
In addition to extensive oil and gas exploration activities, the State Corporation “Turkmengeology” is actively carrying out geological work aimed at replenishing the existing mineral resource base for other types of mineral raw materials, particularly through the prospecting and exploration of solid mineral deposits.
At present, geological exploration for non-ferrous metals is continuing in the Gyzylgaya area. In view of the growing global interest in rare-earth elements, the Corporation is also conducting geological exploration work in this field.
To carry out these activities, the Corporation has been equipped with new equipment and modern crawler-mounted drilling rigs. These rigs are compact, capable of directional drilling, have an exploration depth of up to 1,500 metres and allow core samples to be obtained without repeatedly raising and lowering the drilling tools, among other advantages.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen!
Within the scope of its activities, the Corporation is ready to undertake joint work with interested parties to establish mutually beneficial cooperation in geology, prospecting and exploration of mineral resources, as well as in introducing modern innovative technologies in Turkmenistan.
In concluding my remarks, I would like to express the hope that this international conference will help further develop previously established relations and create new mutually beneficial contacts.
I wish all of you successful work.
