Diamond Found Inside an Apple Goes on Display

Diamond Found Inside an Apple Goes on Display

A rare pink diamond with a remarkable history has gone on public display again in France after remaining unseen for around a century.

Known as the “Grand Condé,” the pear-shaped gemstone weighs 9.01 carats and was last exhibited in October 1926.

The diamond was stolen during a nighttime robbery at the famous Château de Chantilly near Paris, and the theft became one of the most unusual robbery stories in history.

The inexperienced thieves who stole the gemstone — one of the rare royal treasures to survive the French Revolution — hid it inside an ordinary apple.

Several weeks after the theft, a maid at the hotel where the thieves were staying became hungry and bit into an apple left in the room, discovering the diamond hidden inside.

In this unexpected way, the precious stone was eventually returned.

Visitors to the exhibition can see not only the diamond itself, but also learn about its history, research findings, and archival documents that have never previously been published.
