American Man Who Became a Grandfather for the First Time at 92 Sets New World Record
Normand Tousignant, who grew up in a large Catholic family in Gardner, Massachusetts, has entered the Guinness World Records as the oldest person in the world to become a grandfather for the first time. He welcomed his first grandchild at the age of 92 years and 24 days.
Normand’s only granddaughter, Madison, was born on September 22, 2022. According to his daughter Kerry, the joyful event gave her father a renewed enthusiasm for life.
The previous record belonged to Australian Charles Smith, who became a grandfather for the first time at the age of 91 years and 209 days.
Normand grew up in a family of 17 children, but after his siblings passed away, he became the only surviving child of his parents. Even so, he now has 56 nieces and nephews.
Normand spent most of his professional life working as a clinical psychologist. In his free time, he enjoys reading books, solving puzzles, attending concerts and visiting museum exhibitions.
On February 14, 1985, he married Mary Louise, who worked for many years as an editor and reporter at The Washington Post. Five years later, their daughter Kerry was born. At the time, Normand was approaching 60, while his wife was 40.
After retiring, Normand became closely involved in raising his daughter. Although it was less common at the time for fathers to take on childcare duties, he often attended various festive events with her.
Normand and Mary Louise have since moved from Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina, to live closer to their relatives.
