Did You Know About Fantail Pigeons?
Fantail pigeons are considered one of the oldest pigeon breeds. With their distinctive appearance and calm temperament, they stand out from many other birds and have been admired by people for centuries.
According to historical accounts, these elegant birds are believed to have originated in ancient India. At that time, fantail pigeons were kept in the palaces of Indian rulers and nobles as decorative birds. Over time, they spread first to Great Britain and later across Europe. Birds brought from Germany and the Netherlands played an important role in refining the breed.
After the pigeons were introduced to Russia in the first half of the 20th century, breeders and bird specialists focused particularly on developing their luxurious fan-shaped tails.
Fantail pigeons have moderate tolerance to both hot and cold weather, and breeding programs mainly emphasize their appearance. Today, three main internationally recognized standards are commonly mentioned: Russian, American, and Hungarian.
Although fantail pigeons come in various colors, pure white birds are among the most popular.
They require spacious enclosures surrounded by netting. For comfortable living and successful breeding, at least 1 m³ of space is recommended for each pair.
With their striking appearance, fantail pigeons are considered a true ornamental favorite among bird enthusiasts.
