57-Year-Old Briton Karl Walks More Than 50,000 Kilometers Over 28 Years
57-year-old Briton Karl Bushby has completed the journey he began in southern Chile in November 1998. Over 28 years, he covered more than 50,000 kilometers on foot and visited 29 countries.
Throughout the journey, Bushby traveled only by walking and swimming as he made his way back home. During the expedition, he crossed the Darién Gap on foot at a time of intense fighting between the Colombian government and Marxist guerrillas.
He became the first person to cross the Bering Strait on foot from east to west. He also became the first person to swim 296 kilometers across the Caspian Sea.
The last major obstacle on his route was the English Channel. On October 5, Bushby swam from France to the coast of Dover, England. The swim was divided over three days and took nearly 20 hours in total.
He was welcomed on shore by his father, brothers, and friends. German director Werner Herzog, who is making a documentary about him, was also there to greet him.
However, the journey is not yet completely over. Bushby still has around 400 kilometers to walk to Hull in northern England, where he grew up.
