Silver Coin Hoard from the Roman Empire Discovered in Germany

Amateur archaeologist Oliver Riedl discovered a hoard of silver coins dating from the reign of Emperor Hadrian in a field near Cologne, Germany.

According to The Guardian, it is the largest ancient Roman coin hoard ever found in Germany and the fifth-largest such discovery in the world.

The find consists of 934 denarii with a total weight of 3.1 kilograms. Experts estimate that the coins could be worth around €500,000.

The hoard is believed to have been buried in the second half of the 2nd century. The oldest coins date back to 148 BC, while the latest were minted in AD 125 and feature the image of Emperor Hadrian.
