What happened at the World Cup?

In the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held from 11 June to 19 July, Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time to become world champions for the second time in their history.

The tournament, jointly hosted by three countries for the first time, featured 48 national teams and a total of 104 matches. The World Cup, organised by Canada, Mexico and the United States, lasted 39 days.

French footballer Kylian Mbappé finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals. Spain captain Rodri was named the best player of the World Cup.

Spain set a record by conceding only one goal. Their only dropped points came in their opening group-stage match, a 0–0 draw with Cape Verde. Even so, the team set a new record by conceding just one goal in eight matches.
