Amazing Moments from the Depths of the Ocean: Best Underwater Photos of SIPA 2026 Announced
The jury of the Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA) 2026 has announced the most impressive selected works in the “Underwater Life” category.
The photographs capture moments of seabirds hunting, remarkable mass gatherings of fish, rare underwater behavior, and unique scenes of ocean creatures in their natural environment.
The competition’s Grand Prize went to wildlife photographer Nur Tucker for a photograph capturing the fast-paced and intense underwater hunt of seabirds.
1st Place: “Ocean Chaos”
Seabirds compete with one another for food thrown into the water by fishermen. Diving headfirst from the air, the birds continue battling for their prey even beneath the surface.
This unusual feeding scene clearly demonstrates the impact of human activity on nature and animal behavior, showing how artificial abundance can create intense competition.
2nd Place: “Shark Gate”
Off South Africa’s Transkei coast during the sardine gathering season, a shark calmly swims through a dense school of fish despite the chaotic movement surrounding it.
3rd Place: “Mating Dance of Mandarin Fish”
In December 2025, photographer Luke Ruman spent two weeks exploring the volcanic seabed of the Lembeh Strait.
During a twilight dive, he captured a rare mating moment between mandarin fish.
The brightly colored fish briefly rise from the coral thickets into the open water before quickly disappearing from view again.
