Scientists Say Modern Songs Contain Fewer Expressions of Emotion
Have you noticed that songs released in recent years seem to contain fewer emotions and fewer themes related to friendship? A new scientific study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan suggests that this trend may indeed be occurring.
The researchers analyzed the lyrics of 38,467 popular songs released between 1947 and 2024 and identified significant changes in the world of music.
Rather than relying solely on automated systems, the scientists also closely examined the work of 230 well-known artists. To ensure the accuracy of the data, a team of 30 specialists reviewed the lyrics of each song.
This approach made it possible not only to compare different periods, but also to track how the creative styles of individual artists changed over the years.
The number of words referring to family, friendship, and both positive and negative emotions declined significantly in song lyrics.
Music can help people understand their emotions, improve their mood, and build deeper connections with one another.
For this reason, changes in song lyrics may reflect not only trends in music, but also broader changes in how people in modern society form relationships and express their emotions.
