Scientists Find That Hearts from Older Donors Can Become Biologically Younger in Young Bodies
The biological age of a transplanted heart may change to some extent depending on the condition of the body in which it is placed. Scientists reached this conclusion after examining the results of studies conducted in mice and humans.
According to the researchers, the age of a donor heart may not be as strict a limitation in transplantation as previously thought. Hearts taken from older donors and transplanted into younger recipients may partially reverse some signs of biological aging.
During the experiment, scientists transplanted hearts from young, middle-aged, and older mice into other mice. The recipient animals’ own hearts were also left in place.
