New Ranking of the Scariest Movies: “Sinister” Takes the Top Spot Again
The “Science of Scare” research project has released an updated ranking of the scariest movies. Researchers measured the fear response in an unusual way, using special devices to track participants’ heart rates and pulse changes while they watched the films.
According to the results, the 2012 film “Sinister” once again took first place. While watching the movie, viewers’ average heart rate rose from 64 to 86 beats per minute, while the most intense scene pushed it as high as 131. The film scored 96 out of a possible 100 points.
The 2026 study included 15 new films, among them “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” Among this year’s new releases, A24’s “Undertone” was named the scariest, although it ranked only 33rd overall.
The new “Resident Evil” film directed by Zach Cregger set a new record for the strongest jump-scare scene. During that moment, viewers’ heart rates reached 134 beats per minute. Even so, the film did not take first place in the overall ranking.
