According to historians, this belief may have originated in ancient Greek and Roman cultures.

The ancient Greeks associated a person’s reflection in water with their soul. For this reason, damaging objects that produced reflections, including mirrors, was seen as disturbing the integrity of the soul.

The Romans, meanwhile, believed that shiny objects made of metal were tools through which the gods could observe people, and damaging such objects was considered a serious sin.
