Astronomers Are Searching for the “Perfect Earth”
In recent years, astronomical research has increasingly supported the idea that Earth may not be the only or even the most favorable place for life.
For this reason, scientists have begun searching not only for Earth-like planets, but also for so-called “superhabitable planets” where life could remain stable for thousands of years and potentially flourish even more successfully.
These intriguing ideas are discussed in detail in “Other Worlds,” a piece by Natalie Wolchover published by “The New York Times.”
The roots of this concept go back to the 2010s. At that time, some scientists argued that searching for planets only by using the Sun and Earth as models was too limited from a scientific perspective.
In 2014, Max Planck Institute astronomer Rene Heller and Weber University scientist John Armstrong proposed a new hypothesis.
