American Director Robert Eggers Plans to Film “Romeo and Juliet” in Old English

He is in talks with Focus Features regarding the project. The director, known for the film “Nosferatu,” also intends to serve as a producer on the upcoming adaptation.

William Shakespeare’s tragedy, written in the mid-1590s, has been adapted for the screen many times. Among the best-known versions are Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “Romeo + Juliet,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

The director’s next film is scheduled for release in late December 2026. Titled “Werwulf,” it tells the story of a peasant in 14th-century England who turns into a wolf. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the leading role.
