Portugal lost 0–1 to Spain in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who played in the match, has never managed to become a World Cup winner during his playing career. Ronaldo has played for the Portugal senior national team since 2003. In 2006, he and the team reached the semi-finals, losing in the third-place play-off; in 2010, Portugal were knocked out in the round of 16; in 2014 the team failed to progress from the group stage; in 2018, Portugal were knocked out in the round of 16; in 2022, the team failed to get past the quarter-finals; and at the 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese national team were knocked out in the round of 16.
